Taking Atorvastatin? Could These 15 Subtle Side Effects Be Affecting You?
7. Diarrhea or Changes in Bowel Habits
Changes in bowel movements can occur with many medications and health conditions.
Some people taking atorvastatin may experience diarrhea or looser stools.
If diarrhea continues, becomes severe, or causes signs of dehydration, medical advice is appropriate.
8. Constipation
Although diarrhea may occur, changes in bowel habits can also include constipation.
You might notice fewer bowel movements, harder stools, bloating, or discomfort.
Diet, fluid intake, physical activity, other medications, and numerous medical conditions can cause constipation, so persistent symptoms should be evaluated rather than automatically attributed to atorvastatin.
9. Dizziness
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded can have many causes.
Some people report dizziness while taking medications, but dehydration, low blood pressure, inner-ear problems, anemia, blood sugar changes, and other conditions can also produce similar symptoms.
If dizziness is new, recurrent, severe, or associated with fainting, chest pain, weakness, trouble speaking, or difficulty walking, seek medical attention promptly.
10. A General Feeling of Not Feeling Like Yourself
Sometimes a person cannot identify one specific symptom but simply feels different.
You may describe it as feeling “off,” unusually uncomfortable, or less energetic than usual.
That observation is worth discussing with your healthcare provider, especially if it began after a medication was started or changed.
At the same time, a general feeling of malaise is nonspecific and can result from countless causes.
11. Rash or Itching
Skin reactions can occur with medications, although they are not among the most common problems associated with atorvastatin.
Watch for new:
-
Rash
-
Redness
-
Itching
-
Hives
-
Skin irritation
A mild rash should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
If you develop swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or widespread hives, seek emergency medical attention because these can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
12. Changes in Appetite
Changes in appetite can occur for many reasons.
If you suddenly have little interest in food or notice a significant unexplained change in your eating habits after starting a medication, mention it to your healthcare provider.
Unintentional weight loss should also be evaluated, particularly when it continues without an obvious explanation.
13. Memory or Concentration Changes
Some people taking statins have reported memory problems, forgetfulness, or difficulty concentrating.
