The butcher shop was usually quiet when it first opened in the morning.

Most customers came in for a few steaks, a roast, some ground beef, or perhaps enough meat to feed their families for the weekend.

But one morning, everything changed.

Lidia walked through the door just after opening.

She was an older woman who had lived a quiet and modest life in the village for as long as anyone could remember. The butcher, Ovidiu, knew her well.

She had never been the kind of customer who spent much money.

Usually, she bought a small piece of meat, perhaps a few sausages, and sometimes something inexpensive for dinner.

That morning, however, she walked straight toward the counter and quietly made an unusual request.

“Sixty kilos of beef.”

Ovidiu froze.

For a moment, he thought he had misunderstood her.

“Excuse me?”

“Sixty kilos,” Lidia repeated.

The butcher stared at her.

Sixty kilos wasn’t a normal purchase for one person.

It was an enormous amount of meat.

Still, Lidia didn’t explain herself.

She simply reached into her handbag and began counting old bills with trembling fingers.

Ovidiu looked at her carefully.

“Are you having some kind of celebration?” he asked.

“My son is visiting,” she replied.

That answer seemed to satisfy him.

Perhaps she was preparing an enormous family meal.

Perhaps relatives were coming from out of town.

Perhaps there was some special event.

Ovidiu said nothing more.

He began preparing the order.

The work took time.

One package after another was weighed, wrapped, and placed into heavy plastic bags.

When everything was ready, Lidia struggled to carry the packages.

Ovidiu offered to help her.

She immediately refused.

“No. I can manage.”

There was something strange about the way she said it.

It wasn’t simply stubbornness.

She sounded nervous.

As she walked out of the shop carrying the enormous bags, Ovidiu watched her disappear down the street.
