The sound of her footsteps.

He knew when she was happy because she started humming without realizing it.
He knew she hated having cold feet at night.
He knew she always checked the front door twice before sleeping.
He knew the story behind the small scar on her hand.
He knew which memories made her laugh and which ones made her uncomfortable.
Those details weren’t written down anywhere.
They existed between them.
And that was something Ava could never steal.

The experience had affected Alma’s marriage, too.
Not because her husband had stopped loving her.
Quite the opposite.
But trust had become something they consciously rebuilt.
They began talking more openly.
They stopped assuming the other person knew what they were feeling.
They became more intentional about spending time together.
Sometimes they would sit at the kitchen table late at night and talk about completely ordinary things.
Work.
Movies.
Dinner.
Milo.
Plans for the weekend.
The future.
Those conversations might have seemed insignificant before.
Now they felt precious.
Alma realized that ordinary life was exactly what she had almost lost.
She no longer wanted to take it for granted.
the first time she returned to meditation
Months later, Alma decided to meditate again.
The decision wasn’t easy.
The retreat where everything had started had become connected in her mind with fear and uncertainty.
Part of her wanted to avoid meditation forever.
But another part of her refused to let what Ava had done take away something that had once helped her.
