I Spent Five Days Believing I Was With My Wife — Then I Discovered the Truth
Details about her daily schedule.
Even small observations about how she spoke to her husband.
The evidence suggested that Ava had spent years collecting information about her sister.
Alma stared at the pages in disbelief.
“She wrote all of this?”
The investigator nodded.
“She was documenting your life.”
Alma felt a chill move through her.
She had always known Ava was fascinated by her.
When they were younger, Ava sometimes borrowed her clothes.
Later, she began copying her hairstyle.
Then her hobbies.
Then her social interests.
At the time, Alma had considered it annoying but harmless.
She never imagined it could become something much more serious.
One of the investigators explained that Ava appeared to believe she could eventually step into Alma’s life if she knew enough about it.
But there was one problem Ava hadn’t understood.
Knowing someone’s routine isn’t the same as knowing the person.
Memorizing someone’s favorite meal isn’t the same as knowing why they love it.
Learning how someone speaks isn’t the same as understanding what they’re thinking.
And copying someone’s habits isn’t the same as sharing their memories.
That difference would become extremely important.
the questions alma couldn’t stop asking
Even after the investigation moved forward, Alma had questions.
Why had Ava become obsessed with her?
Why didn’t she simply build her own life?
Why had she chosen to go this far?
And most painfully:
Had Alma missed the warning signs?
Her husband immediately told her the answer.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You couldn’t have known.”
“But she had been copying me for years.”
“That doesn’t mean you could have predicted this.”
He was right.
Hindsight can make everything look obvious.
But before the truth was revealed, each strange behavior had seemed insignificant.
A borrowed jacket.
A copied hairstyle.
A similar hobby.
A familiar phrase.
